American Football in Ireland: Touchdowns Across the Atlantic

When you think of Ireland, a few things probably come to mind right away: lush green landscapes, cozy pubs, and of course, Gaelic football and hurling. But in recent years, something a little different has been making waves on Irish turf: American football.

Over the past few summers, Dublin has welcomed college football fans with open arms (and pints of Guinness). U.S. universities have flown their teams across the Atlantic for what’s become a mini tradition: big kickoff games played right in Aviva Stadium.

I happened to be flying into Dublin in both August 2025, right when the action was heating up. Let me tell you, you could spot the fans from a mile away. My flight was filled with people in Iowa State and K-State gear, heading to Dublin for the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. Walking around certain parts of Dublin felt like a tailgate party: chants, colors, and all the excitement you’d expect on game day, just with the River Liffey in the background instead of the Mississippi or the Ohio.

And it’s not just college ball anymore. This coming weekend, Dublin will host an NFL game, bringing even more attention (and helmets) to Ireland. For many Irish sports fans, it’s a novelty - part cultural exchange, part spectacle, and definitely a great excuse to soak up the buzz in the city.

Whether you’re a lifelong American football fan or you can’t tell a field goal from a free kick, it’s hard not to get caught up in the fun. It’s another reminder that travel always brings surprises, sometimes even touchdowns in unexpected places.

So, if you’re planning a future trip to Ireland, keep an eye on the sports calendar. You never know when you might land in Dublin just in time for a little piece of Americana on Irish soil.
