How to Get a U.S. Passport (for Your Trip to Ireland)
Planning a trip to Ireland? If you're a U.S. citizen, you'll need a valid passport to travel to Ireland.
This post walks you through the basics of applying for or renewing a U.S. passport. These are general guidelines for most travelers, but be sure to refer to the U.S. State Department website for official information, special circumstances, and updates.
Step 1: Determine Which Form You Need
Form DS-11 is for:
Adults applying for the first time
Children under age 18
Form DS-82 is for:
Adults renewing a passport that was issued when they were age 16 or older, within the past 15 years
Step 2: Collect Your Documentation
You’ll need:
Proof of U.S. citizenship (e.g., birth certificate, naturalization certificate)
Government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver’s license)
Proof of parental relationship (if applying for a child under 16)
Step 3: Get a Passport Photo
You’ll need one color photo, 2” x 2”, taken in the last 6 months. Most pharmacies (like CVS or Walgreens) and shipping centers (like FedEx or UPS) offer passport photo services.
Step 4: Calculate Your Fees
As of 2025, fees typically range from $100–165 depending on:
Whether you’re applying or renewing
Your age (children’s passports are slightly less)
Whether you need expedited service

Step 5: Submit Your Application
First-time applicants and minors must apply in person (usually at a post office or passport acceptance facility)
Renewals can typically be done by mail
Use the State Department’s appointment finder to locate nearby facilities.
🧳 A Few More Things to Know
Processing time is usually 6–8 weeks, or 2–3 weeks if expedited (extra $60)
Some countries require blank passport pages for visas or stamps
If your passport was issued under age 16, it’s only valid for 5 years
Most countries require that your passport be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. Ireland does not require this, but it's a good habit to check.
Happy Travels!
Once your passport is ready, you’re one step closer to exploring Ireland.
